Yikes! Going over what I have here so far I see that there is nothing to indicate that the module ever did load- I forgot to do a lsmod and post it. All I can say is that I modprobed the snd-ali5451 on the previous occasions, and it showed up in lsmod afterward. I guess it's not necessary to take my word for it since now the module isn't loaded, but I look like an idiot trying to say "No, really! It was loading before!" Well, dang it, it was...
