I really think the right place for a fix like this would be to have a
rule at:
/lib/udev/rules.d/99-vmware-scsi-udev.rules
from open-vm-tools package.
>From a previous fix I did to sg3-tools, I remember ignoring disks
without VPDs and providing them a SCSI_ID based on something else.

The problem is that you have the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter, so the
graphics driver won't work.
Please:
1. Remove the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter from /etc/default/grub
2. sudo update-grub
3. sudo reboot

option for the icon, Variety will first check if the current GTK theme
has an icon named "variety-indicator" and will use it instead of the
bundled light icon.

The reason it works in the LiveCD is probably because you're using a
different driver there (the open source 'nouveau' driver). So a solution
here might just be to uninstall the nvidia-440 driver.
