Same thing happens in alsamixer for me.
Alsamixer shows that the PCM channel at 74 has "dB gain=0.00, 0.00". Setting
PCM above 74 increases the dB gain above 0, and results in distortion.

Happened to me too. I'm running Gutsy i386 on an IBM Thinkpad T42p.
Started acting up after I updated some packages this morning. Here's a list of
packages that got updated. Maybe someone can spot the culprit.
apt-utils_0.7.6ubuntu11_i386.deb
apt_0.7.6ubuntu11_i386.deb

This is not a bug report. If you happen to install ubuntu while you were in
alstralia you choose in the first couple of prompts in installer your country
and it from there adds it to /etc/apt/sources.list.
Im not sure hwer eyou are right now but open /etc/apt/sources.list in your

I have reset my mirrors to the main servers using update-manager's

/etc/apt/sources.list or any files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d.
Then I ran update-manager -c -d. It failed as above.

I have one of the new Dells that comes with Ubuntu pre-installed. Runs
OK, but the live CD that came with it cannot boot. I always get to a
text-mode screen with this error message:
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)
I know it's not a defective CD.
If you're having problems (like I was), don't forget to try upgrading
your BIOS. I finally got it to work on my Inspiron 1300/Feisty system
by upgrading my BIOS from A02 to A10.

I have my doubts that it is fixed, because the characters are embedded

And since this bug appears in the current version, I'm filing it.
