Between Bionic and Focal, dhclient was patched to set the valid_lft on
ipv4 addresses, which is a timer in the kernel that tells the kernel
when to reap the IP. dhclient then is supposed to issue repeated `ip
addr add` commands to reset this lft and prevent the kernel from

/etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate executes it's code between ()& starting on line 25.
this is to be able to wait until /usr is mounted, when it isn't already.
If that check is disabled, and the run-in-background ampersand is commented out
(line 46), the ntp daemon starts just fine.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 16.10 sound works strangely, I have sound on the
login screen, but not on the desktop. In Ubuntu 16.04 everything worked well, I
kept this distribution controller to see if it worked and did not happen.

Note, in the kern.log above which shows the last hour of usage, there is
a Call Trace for NetworkManager from the previous time I booted up after
I was no longer able to reconnect. It's probably worth looking at this
crash, however, in the most recent reboot, a restart of NetworkManager

lucky and the wifi came back after restarting NetworkManager:

I ran into this today and the problem turned out to be /tmp:
# ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxr-x 11 ubuntu ubuntu 4096 Aug 24 00:23 /tmp
This fixed it:
# chown root:root /tmp
# chmod 1777 /tmp
I don't know how /tmp got in that state on my server (it's a fairly
