There is a solution for that issue. You need to run the following to
change the settings:
gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock require-pressure-
to-show false
I tested it at Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS guest on VMware workstation. I think
it may apply to Virtualbox case as well.

Identical process and identical failure when trying to connect the Epsom
printer in Mint. Means it is in the driver. What is needed is some
defensive programming in the installer which will prevent freezes in bad
situations, and inform the user about what happened so that some fix can
be requested

That's correct: only the dbus patch is absolutely necessary, but since
the patch wasn't merged yet to dbus I am still not 100% sure if it is
considered ready for prime time. It seems to work for us.
As Łukasz observed, the systemd patch is a lot more extensive. Even
though it was merged to master,

the only way to get rid of the giant thing is to reboot or perhaps log
out and back in. I keep forgetting and doing it again, like 4

Addendum to my last comment. The only way I can get the cursor to do
that is when an image is open in Image Viewer and i forget and try to
drag it , then the cursor changes into that image .
