I'm experiencing this issue after upgrading to 20.04 from 19.10. My
headphones are Bose QC35s. Pretty much exactly the same symptoms.
Sound works well from A2DP profile. Sound stops working when HSP/HFP is
selected. Works when A2DP is,again, selected.
Tried deleting the user .config profile.
This primarily seems to be affecting Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and is likely due
to changes in version 2.20.9-0ubuntu7.14 of apport. Looking at some of
the crash reports it seems they were trying to process an xorg crash

sudo hciconfig hci0 noscan will turn discovery off but leave bluetooth
on. I added the line to the /etc/rc.local file so that it will start at
every reboot without the sudo. So the line will read hciconfig hci0
noscan. This is a temporary workaround until this is fixed. This bug
persists in 20.
