Currently, sending a message just fails with "authentication unsuccessful"

's a completely separate problem. What IMAP server are you using and on what system (Unix, Linux, etc.)? Also, you should see IMAP rejection messages in your log. Post them here if you can.

I have set up the standard spam filters (the plugin that comes with the
standard setup, by choosing "options", then "Spam Filters" then choosing
from various lists).
Not one single spam message has been identified.
The mail server is not mine. I only have FTP access,
I have already set "your hop".

I am running SquirrelMail 1.4.4 on one (Linux) server, and the mail server
is remote and runs courier.
I have set up DNS filters but it does nothing (as far as I can tell).
There is a file "dnscache" under data directory, but it is always empty.
The plugins I have are:
