I've discovered the reason Squirrelmail was timing out when clicking
send from some networks. I originally thought this was a proxy problem
on the remote machine, but it turns out it was a problem with the mtu
value being too high on the server. I only put two and two together

I'm using Squirrelmail 1.4.1 and I've noticed a problem with sending
mail if I'm behind some proxy servers. I think it's a proxy problem,
anyway. One in particular that I've noticed a problem with is Squid
(www.squid-cache.org). E-mail can be read, but messages to be sent
time out with a "ze
