I recently completed a IIS --> MYSQL --> Squirrelmail 1.4.2 installation attempt.
Everything seemed to go quite smoothly until my first login attempt, at which point I
received the following error in my web browser:
Preference database error (not found). Exiting abnormally

OK, I used the recursive CHMOD 777 as suggested, but
still no dice.
But why does the error message use the
"###VIRTUAL_DOMAIN###" magic string instead of the
actual domain name?

I installed SM 1.4.2 on Red Hat Linux 9.0.
The web page comes up fine. User enters ID and Password, and
gets:
Error Connecting to IMAP Server:
192.168.44.23.
110: Connection Timed
Out
1) What can I do?
2) How can I tell the version of
IMAP?

Thanks for the PHP/Apache test procedure - much appreciated!
By the way - Squirrelmail 4.x was designed to be compatible with 4.0.6 and
the INSTALL files still says 4.0.6 (information from pdontthink).

I have this problem with SM 1.2.10 not working on netscape 4.x series. Never
head a problem with later browsers though - I'm using PHP 4.0.6.

that DOES work and one that doesn't and check out the cookie and session
