I am unable to reproduce the error on SM 1.2.11 with information that you have provided. Courier-imap and SM 1.2.11 renders message with similar headers without errors. I can't test RH9 system with uw-imap and php 4.2.2. full message source is needed or at least source of generated html page. You

I missed this thread before, but we had a similar issue when we moved from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2. Every time a user opened a message the screen was blank. Turned out to be something in their pref file. Not sure what, but I found that the pref files had very few options in them, so deleted them and replace
