I knew I remembered this error. A quick search through the list archives
on Moongroup's site finally reminded me of where I saw it.
I don't know if it's still present in 2.2.19, but earlier 2.2 kernels
had a "Use multi-mode by default" option that says:
Use multi-mode by default
CONFIG_IDEDISK
Is support for old MFM drives in your kernel?
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD_ONLY
Also see CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE and turn CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO off.

the drive, but the kernel already seems to be doing that upon bootup.

Okay, this is now officially driving me insane. After realizing I
couldn't get ipchains to work (easily) under v2.4.3, I dropped to
v2.2.19, however now I'm faced with a different problem. One that I did
not have with either 2.0 kernels, nor with 2.4...
