[snip] My concern is that this machine is an NIS and Samba server. There are a lot of important configuration files on the root partition. If I wanted to do a fresh installation, what files or directories should I back up to be able to recover NIS, Samba, networking, etc., as easily as possible?

Hi, I have a machine that's been running Red Hat for about four years straight now, since 5.1. It's been upgraded using genuine Red Hat packaged CDs up to 8.0 now. Unfortunately, the last upgrade from 7.2 to 8.0 went pretty bad. The upgrade actually aborted with a message saying that X coul
