Another good question for you all - I have a 5 button mouse (2x left, 2x
right & middle). The extra 2 buttons were, in windows, used for fwd and
back in IE and the file manager. Im not bothered about it working in my
internet browser - mouse gestures in opera sorted that one.

I'll bet you have a scroll mouse? I had the same problem. I set the
mouse to generic 3 button mouse and it now works, without the scroll, of
course.
I went thru the same thing a while ago, found no answers, and settled
for the above work around.

I would want the keyboard, mouse and monitor all to be on the remote
computer. I guess I forgot to include that little detail.
I'll have more specific questions in a few days after I set it up to
use. I may have enough parts to make up a second computer for Linux.

For individual GUI applications just turn on X11 forwarding and
X11 traffic will be tunneled through the ssh pipe.
If you want the full desktop you could use vnc tunneled through ssh

I just changed my mouse from a 2-button PS/2 mouse to a 2-button+scroll
USB mouse.
What I've noticed is that before getting the login screen of RedHat 9, I
get the "nVIDIA" logo for about 10/15 sec.! Another thing is that the
keyboard doesn't respond on the login

went into my Config file.. and changed the Protocol to IMPS/2.
