I had a similar problem with an HP Photosmart I think the work around for
installing it as a network printer was to tell it you were doing a local
install it complained that it wasn't there but installed then I changed
the port. I know I found the workaround in the hp forum for the printer

Hi. I have a HP PhotoSmart P1000 printer connected to my Red Hat 8.0 and
shared with my Windows XP machines via Samba.
