To fix a typo of mine, I said null keys in my previous post on this
subject. Bret Hughes was quite correct in asking if I meant null
passwords.

What kind of UPS is this? There already exists software that supports
network shutdown for various UPSs. I don't have an URL handy, but check
freshmeat. All you need to do is find one that supports linux as a client,
and nt as the server/master

there is no option in nt to use a password... just a login name
