I ran into that problem before. Here is what I did to get it to
compile...
cd /usr/src/linux
make distclean
make clean
make mrproper
make xconfig
make clean
make dep
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
mv /boot/vml

IMHO, Kernel Compiling in X == Bad Thing try going to a console and
'make
menuconfig' IMHO its safer. Less SegFaults too.
