In my experience, Sig 11's during a huge compile (as e.g. kernel
compile) are almost always hardware related. I myself had cases of bad
cache, bad CPU and bad RAM (independent of compiling within or outside
of X), so yes, I'd check that first. I also recommend the Sig 11 FAQ:
