"layers" on top of XFree86.
That's my unde

Once I log in through GDM, my numlock no longer works. meaning the light
is off and doesn't change by pressing the numlock key, yet pressing the
numpad keys produces numbers, i.e. the numlock is permanently on. This
behaviour starts as soon as I login with GDM. Before I log in, it works

Check the Linux Documentation Project. Buried in there somewhere is a
script to manage the numlock status on TTYs. You'll also need to read
through the XFree86 docs t

setleds command in rc.local. in RH, even you said in
rc.local 'setleds +num', once the login prmpt appears

(is this a bug or just something overrides it?).
I recommend put

*sigh*
It would be nice if this worked, but such is not the case.
The kernel resets the Numlock state on boot.
See man setleds for a small script that will set Numlock on
You Can Lock Numlock
key from the setup of the BIOS of Your Machine.

If are only in text mode:
edit ~/.bashrc
And add this line:
setleds +num
If you are using KDE, run kcontrol and go to
Peripherals> Keyboard>Advanced
You can set the Numlock option there.
Not too sure how to do this in gnome.
