That's a loaded question...  ;)

XFree (actually XFree86) is the X-Windows that most Linux distributions
use, at least the ones that I've used.  GUI's like Gnome, KDE, etc., are
"layers" on top of XFree86.

That's my understanding at least.  A more detailed answer may be
available, though.  :)

Don't know about the NUM-Lock on start, though.  I usually can set it in
the BIOS, but since my keyboard is wireless and hooked up through a KVM,
it doesn't like to play nice "all" the time.  ;)
