Tonight I tried to install the lucent drivers for the modem in my
laptop. in the past I've used this before and have had no problem.
But now when I try to compile the module it complains that the source
code is not compatible with GCC 3.

I don't think you'll find any. Besides that, if pain and suffering
counts for anything, the ethernet may be cheaper in the long run.

I just compiled kernel 2.0.34 and it's great. But, I tried to run Minicom
and i got the error /dev/modem file or directory not found. My question is:
Does modem support need to be compiled into the kernel? I don't remember
seeing a modem question in the make config. Or can it be
