Getting modem to report connection speed with PPP

Hi, I have checked the various FAQs and MAN pages but no real luck. I am dialing my ISP usng PPPD / CHAT using a perl script i obtained off my ISP site. I want to get the actual connection speed reported preferably to screen but failing that, a file would do. I gather i need to put REPORT
