True, Sophos is very good. It's also not free for individual use; this may
be important to some.

Hi,
I am looking for a cheap email virus scanning package to install with
sendmail.
I have had a quick look at mailscanner and this looks like it does the job
but requires another package for the virus scanning, is this right? If so
will some like F-Prot do the job

Actually, you don't really want something invoked from procmail, as that
limits the scanner's usage to inbound mail, only.
Mailscanner and AMaViS are both good programs (I use amavis, personally).
Both support a number of different scanning engines, though most are not
free.

What are the best options for virus scanning under linux? I'd like
something invoked from procmail, the way spamassassin is.
I'm interested in both server- and client-side solutions and I bet
there are some good ones out there.

Greetings
I'm starting to implement an ANTI-SPAM and ANTI-VIRUS system with sendmail.
I've searched for documentation and I found some but I would like to hear
some opinions about what is the best software to use to provide this.
Note: open-source/freeware or GPL

I do believe that AMANDA will do this for you. It is only bound to
actual partitions if you are using dump. Set it to use GNUTar.
I am currently backing up a server (where AMANDA is running) with 3
entries:
/home (own disk)
/var (own disk)

our SMTP to do virus checking on our server. Before I
attempt installing it, does anyone have any recommendations
on other AV products that will run on our mail server?

I suggest you check out mailscanner. I'm using it to scan
incoming/outgoing messages for viruses. I also installed spamassassin.
It will work with mailscanner or in a .procmailrc file.

do you want free software? Amavis is just a
wrapper for calling an installed anti-virus program, it isn't an anti-virus
engine.
