xdm doesn't know anything about your shell-of-choice's PATH environment variable. It sets its own path, and the default path can be funky. Try setting paths in your xdm configuration files. In xdm-config, I have DisplayManager._0.userPath: \ /usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin/:/usr/bin
