xdm doesn't know anything about your shell-of-choice's PATH environment
variable. It sets its own path, and the default path can be funky. Try
setting paths in your xdm configuration files.
In xdm-config, I have
DisplayManager._0.userPath: \
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin/:/usr/bin/mh:\
/usr/local/Office40/bin
DisplayManager._0.systemPath: \
/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:\
/usr/bin/mh:/usr/local/Office40/bin
except the \ characters to escape the line breaks aren't there, and each
command is entirely on one line (though the \ with a linebreak might work).
