I have an isa modem too. I managed to make it work:
(1) set the jumper right for the port (COM2, or whatever)
(2) disable the PnP OS option in you BIOS so that the BIOS, knowing your
OS is not capble of PNP, will configure the modem to the right IRQ and
etc.
(3) use setserial to lk at the /d
Yeah, it was the NIC problem. it was not configured properly at boot. the
IRQ is not assigned. I overlooked that part when I used ifconfigu to check
this.
It is working ok now asfter I disab led pnp OS in the bios. ANd the bios
configured the irq instead of leaving it to the OS.

I thought my NIC was working, but now ... when I did a "traceroute
localhost" or "taceroute 192.168.1.1(the ip I assigned to the NIC)" it
reported "could not find any interfaces".
I am using SMC eznet 10/100 pci NIC, which is supposedly supported by the
rtl3198 driver (not sure though). I was ab

It is frustrating and feels stupid too. I have all the files ready
(/etc/hosts,/etc/sysconfig/network, etc.) I have assigned prviate ip # to the machine.
My NIC is working (they show up upon "ifconfig eth0" command). But I could
ping the other machine ("network unreachable").
Any idea?

Is this card supported by LINUX? I did not find any reference to it in the
Ethernet HOWTO.
If it is ok with Linux, which driver should I use.
I bought this card because it has Turbo linux icon on its package. I
assume it supports linux in general. I have not yet tried it though.

I need to buy a printer which I hope will work with both windoze and linux

I got a device busy error when I tried to configure the sound using

I remember that "sound" used to be an option in "ntsysv", but it is not
there any more since I replaced my 5.1 with 6.1. (6.1 looks great!)
what will prevent root user from doing "chmod 0755 /home"? I just could

My /home directory is defaulted to "0444". As a result, adduser

This is two questions combined. Sorry.
The PPP howto available on the net is way too old. It talks about redhat
4.0 and PPP 2.2. Is there a new version somewhere?
When is REDHAT 6.2 due out? I think it is time to upgrade my redhat 5.2.

But I have a winmodem in my machine. How do I install this new one? Should
I treat this new one as a PnP device? or should i reset the jumpers and

When I issue "poweroff", what my linux does is "halt" the system, and no
more. What should I do to really make the poweroff work?
I have Windows 95 installed also. It can shut down the PC very easily.
