I followed the earlier suggestion of checking my BIOS port settings, and sure enough, they were set to "auto". Selecting the fixed value solved the problem, but I still had to add the "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" line to /etc/conf.modules. Rohan Parkes -Origin

Hayes Accura 366000. I suppose the only other options are IRQ problems, or motherboard incompatibilities. I have a new Gigabyte BX.
