After having installed Red Hat 6.1, I find that my modem and printer ports
are not working. I can't work out if it's the same problem affecting both,
however. The printer port LP1 appears to be not detected - the
configuration panel doesn't appear during installation, and if I use the
test options in Printtool, I variously get messages like "there is no device
at /dev/lp0" and "the lp daemon cannot start" (which I gather really means
it can't detect the printer). I've done all the configuration I can. The
printer is an Epson Stylus 500.

I notice there seems to be a lot of postings about this on the Lixux
newsgroup. Replies often state that there is a known bug in 6.1 which
affects printing. However, I tried installing 6.0 instead, with no success.

The standard responses to the problem are to either upgrade the modutils rpm
(I tried this, and ended up with no sound either), or to add the line alias
parport_lowlevel parport_pc to /etc/conf.modules. This had no effect either.

I can't tell if the modem problem is related. The serial ports appear during
installation. However, I can't get minicom to respond. the modem is a Hayes
Accura 366000.

I suppose the only other options are IRQ problems, or motherboard
incompatibilities. I have a new Gigabyte BX. The only information I could
find in the HOWTOs implied that it is difficult to debug IRQ conflicts in
Linux.
