The docs kept saying make sure your device has the necessary permissions,
without saying exactly in which sense that was meant.
Finally, a few weeks ago I got most of my machines upgraded properly to
6.7, they were mostly 6.4 or earlier.
Went to try my Canon flatbed scanner and xsane woul
persize but I see neither the function that tries
to get it, nor the specs for what has to be in /etc.
Thanks and cheers!

Hi Vijay,
Nice to hear from you too -- and it's been a while. I think your test
- experience is quite useful, and your synopsis is encouraging. No need
to send all the gory details.
I was a bit afraid to mess around too much with the machine I do most
of my work at home on. I had tried

I am hoping that I am only a few clues away from getting the feel for the
whole structure. Sometimes wonder what balance one should take between
reading through miles of code and just begging for an island of insight.
Thanks!

did pkg_add.
But beside that, I wonder which LATEX packages would be appropriate to
load for "installing latex and dvipng".
If I knew that, I would explore deeper to see if I thought the current
port was worth looking deeper into.
So perhaps you or someone else would take a moment to encourage me.

Using 6.0 on an AMD64 wxMaxima seems to run for me.
I installed the ports directory, and commented out the "Broken" tag in
the makefile. Did a make, and it ran for quite a while -- so many parts
to it. Encountered one problem the first time: ran out of inodes...

Hi Brian, Tim,
Just got my Basic and Advanced ham license here, and am starting to try
to figure out how to use fldigi.
Don't see any more recent activity on the ports list, so wonder if
testing it on 5.6 will be of any value at this point.

Hi Predrag,
Thanks for the perspective and especially the tip about the Mathematica
install, which should be quite interesting to look at.
The number of different and often semi-specialized versions of Linux
has certainly multiplied in the years since years ago when we had to u

Anyway, I'd still appreciate your insight, even if only presuming
hypothetically, that compat-linux was worth the effort. It would also
give me some broader vision of the how to approach issues.

That's right. The ports directory is not there by default. But if you
make one, or are there when you untar the ...gz file with all the ports in
it, one will be created.

Hi Ports People,
Any one know why the link for 4.2 packages on
http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq15#PkgFind
goes to a directory without an index.html page? Compare to the link just
above it to 4.3 packages.
