I've also had problems with secure servers, on again off again, I will
do a purge of pan and a clean install. I might even have to dig into the
source code.

I got the hint to
./configure --with-gmime30
which worked with my gmime3.2
from
https://download-fallback.gnome.org/sources/gmime/
then
make
sudo make install
(I had to do sudo as I got the error /usr/b
