Ubuntu 16.04, the screen resolution dropped, because it stopped using
the nvidia drivers.
After reverting back to linux-image-4.4.0-185-generic all got back to
normality.

Ok, I found the cause: I had the meta package linux-image-generic
installed, but not the metapackage linux-generic. For that reason, when
kernel was upgraded the package with the kernel headers wasn't upgraded,
and that caused the issue (that of course disappeared reverting to the
previous kernel v

I cannot install an official Nvidia driver. The official driver for my
adapter is nvidia-340, that is not compatible with the latest kernel,
failed to build on Ubuntu 20.4 (it is a known bug that I had already
reported as affecting me:

Neither replacing the video card (expensive) nor installing an older
version (that would break most of the software already installed and
would leave me exposed to security bugs) are viable options, especially
since the issue occurs rarely.
The package for drivers 340 still exists for Ubuntu 22.04
Installing version 20.04 would get me stuck with the previous version of apps
and libraries, and that would be more annoying that dealing with the bug (since
it usually doesn't occur, and when it occurs it usually just require a system
restart. Also, I replaced the Nvidia driver with nouveau sin
As I said, most of the times boot proceeds with no issues. (I have heard
that boot sequence is randomized to make it less easier to attack by
code injection, maybe it depends on the order of loading?)
What does the nosplash parameter do? For now, at least, I can live with

I am able to see the S.M.A.R.T. data.

In gnome-disk-utility the SMART option for my system hard drive (so,
internal hard drive, not external one) is grayed out and not available
after the last kernel upgrade. It worked perfectly before the upgrade.
