Neither replacing the video card (expensive) nor installing an older
version (that would break most of the software already installed and
would leave me exposed to security bugs) are viable options, especially
since the issue occurs rarely.

The package for drivers 340 still exists for Ubuntu 22.04, but as far as
I could see it's just a virtual package that installs nouveau instead,
and I guess it's only purpose is to replacing the proprietary driver
with the open source one during a system update from Ubuntu 20.

Also, since Nvidia has finally decided to go open source
(https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-releases-open-source-gpu-
kernel-modules/ ), I expect that in the future the nouveau driver will
become the only one anyway and the Nvidia drivers will be integrated in
it.
