I did install haveged which indeed seems to help quite a bit. But now
after having used an xlarge (8 CPU) instance for a while, I again get
hanging processes, like

Retitling. The "unusably slow" part was fixed with installing haveged,
so what remains is that the 8x CPU instance gets into this lockup state

image, and lo and behold: Both setting it up and running two parallel
loops with calling adt-run over night, and they went through ~ 500
iterations without a hitch.
So I suppose this was fixed by some newer kernel, the new glibc

Still seeing this in nvidia-settings version 331.20 from the xorg-edgers
PPA on Xubuntu 12.10. I updated the title to make it less version

So that actually looks fine. The zoom in/out keys produce proper key
values, and the camera symbol produces KEY_IMAGES, i. e. open your
photos.
Unfortunately these key codes are all > 255, so they can't be used in

Yes, it is still an issue on ubuntu 13.10. (No proprietary NVidia driver
installed.) I will test the problem on the latest development version of
ubuntu.

documents and those use a white background (typically PDF documents).

Ok, so now there's some progress but it still doesn't work right. Now
the kernel uncompresses ok but something still goes wrong when it should
be booted - it goes as far as "Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the
kernel." but nothing past that.
For the record, I wasn't able to install the linux-
I forgot to mention - I've removed the "quiet splash" options from
/boot/boot.script, so I normally get everything starting from this:

But with your kernel I don't get this far.
