Adding 'acpi_osi=' to /etc/default/grub solves it all for me, on an old
Dell laptop, an old Compaq nx7400 and a quite new HP G2. This seem to
fool the bios to think its a Windows OS.
Doing a 'sudo update-initramfs -u' and ' sudo update-grub' and a reboot
makes it complete.
This back-light issue
I apologise, but it seems as though the issue has resolved itself. I am
no longer able to reproduce the problem.

Sorry I didn't test it yet. I had to travel and use the computer so I
did a fsck on onvme0n1p2 only, to get it working.
I thought fsck /dev/nvme0n1p2 was the same a fscking the rootfs. I do it
every time the error happens. I didn't understand exactly what you
meant.
Also I think NVME_QUIRK_NO_DEE

I was about to give up trying to recreate this. Everything was updated
as a hour or so earlier today. Meaning in the last 5 days, whatever
updates were prompted had been applied as and when they showed up and I
got around to doing the updates. System had not been restarted since
the time below.
