In comment #34 you state:
"This leads one to believe there is a user space component to this that stopped
allowing 4.5-rc3+ to work for you."
I had not changed anything that would account for this, other than responding
to your request for a new kernel.

On my system, 4.6.0rc3+intel-drm-next solved the issue.
Other people report solution only with more recent version,
4.6.0rc5+intel-drm-next.
The difference in reports might be related to installed BIOS version or/and
power management behavior in different conditions.

personally tested only the ones documented as a workaround in this bug
description.

kernels. These kernels still have the problem so they are not work
arounds. The link posted by @bettini will solve the current problem, but
they have other bugs(suspend resume bug). So there is no current work
around for this pr

source package that has the problem and I'm not sure how else to show
that this is a problem in trusty AND xenial (and probably everything in-
between).

Hello Christopher,
testing the latest current Intel upstream kernel also has the bug. The
rc5 kernel is still the highest default kernel in my Grub2 boot menu, so
i had to use the [esc] key when booting up to manually choose which
kernel to load. After loading the Intel upstream kernel

successfully from SCRx31 USB reader. Card also works on kernel 3.13.0
(different Dell computer) with same Broadcom 5880 reader.
