Found an usb drive with -6 linux image. Booted & ran fine. -8 from update will rarely start unity. -7 never boots to panels. BTW, Xorg seems to be running the screen fine. Starting unity gets many lines of errors but I don't know what log these might be stored in - I haven't found any of these
