I was having this problem under Mint 21.3 with kernel version 5.15.0-118
and so reverted to kernel version 5.15.0-117. I just upgraded to
5.15.0-121 and the problem is gone. I can once again suspend my
Thinkpad T480s successfully. Thanks much for the fix.

I had to install the linux-modules-extra to get wifi to work as well.
I just changed from fedora to ubuntu three weeks ago (after an unwanted
ssd replacement) and can now finally use my ubuntu notebook as it is
supposed to be
Just updated to 5.11.0-38-generic on my ProBook 450 G6 with an i7-8565U
processor and both displays are back to working again. On 20.04 focal.
5.11.0-37-generic did not work, so it was something that was part of the
-38 update that fixed the issue for me.

had to stick with the 5.8.0-55-generic kernel because anything newer

According to that the sink thinks everything is fine, so no idea why
generates short hpds.
Could be some kind of PSR fail. Please try passing i915.enable_psr=0 to
the kernel cmdline.

Alright, got the computer to reboot a second time and it appears as if the
problem is fixed! The gradient on the login screen isn't a perfect
gradient, but that's a different issue.
Maybe dithering should be forced "off" in a near future update?

Upon doing the first command you suggested, after a reboot, the PC screen
turned on and off a few times and now the screen is just black. I'm
force-rebooting the PC now and seeing if I'll regain the image on my screen.
