I've came across this bug report, when dealing with the same problem on
Dell E7450 (pretty much always docked) on kernel 5.9.11.
For anyone who stumbles upon this:

Thanks for the tip on the Nvidia drivers. I can confirm that switching
to the open source driver for GeForce MX250 (on my Asus UX334F) helped
and my mic and headphones are working.
The sounds is indeed 'metallic' without the headphones.

Oh, damn, forgot that I put this up here. It was the same after
switching to 18.04, but then I fixed it. Turns out that problems loading
the graphics driver during boot are so common, that there's a grub
option that disables it:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
This needs to be set and Grub
I was able to verify that the fix in Xenial 4.4.0-138.164 works. The
procedure was the same as in comment #4 [1], but with less run time.

After installing the proposed packages and rebooting, everything booted
correctly, although the nvidia driver was still loaded (I had my system
set to use intel) and power use was quite high (~23W).

I do experience this bug as well. Everything was working under artful,
now it does not - in my case this was not an upgrade, but a clean
(erase&install) installation of bionic. Computer affected: ASUS F556U.

The vmwgfx kernel module does not support devices without the pitchlock
capability. Sorry. In that case you need to use the xf86-video-vmware
driver standalone without kernel modesetting.
So presumably this is some capability to be added to the qemu device
