I've been running the mainline kernels on this system since reporting.
So 6.12.x, 6.13.x, 6.14.x and 6.15.x.
None of these has ever shown the problem.
I'll be updating it 25.04 soon, so expect the problem will have gone
there (since that has a 6.14 kernel).

I think I have found the cause, although it seems a little odd.
Yesterday the system ended up in the "powered down" state shortly after boot. I
may have booted the wrong kernel.
Anyway I rebooted to the 6.8.0-48-generic kernel and all was OK.
Until my daily backup reported that it couldn't find
6.11.0-061100-generic produced the crash at boot time this morning (7th
boot with that kernel).
So I'm back with 6.12.3-061203-generic, as that seems to have removed
the problem.

There is one unrelated issue I've seen.
With 6.12.3-061203-generic #202412060638 I can't start Virtualbox
(7.0.20) unless I first remove the kvm_intel kernel module (Virtualbox
claims it can't start under KVM - or something like that).
I don't (knowingly) have anything that is using kvm, but kvm_
46 boots of 6.12.3-061203-generic #202412060638 without a start-up
crash.
I'm now trying 6.11.0-061100-generic to see whether it is the mainline
or 6.12 part that has changed things.
(Although it's not necessarily fixed - it could be a timing issue that
the Oracular 6.11 series is more likely to
6.12.3 (mainline) also powers off after a few seconds and requires an off/on
reset of the mains switch.
(Although the LED light on the power switch does go off with this release).

Intel NUC just stops (no crash - just loses all power). That runs OK if
I use the 6.8.0-48-generic kernel from Noble (left there from teh

I could also try 6.8.0-48-generic from noble, if I can get it all installed
(this laptop is new, and had Oracular on it from scratch).
The noble kernel should run OK as I have another system on which I *have* to
use it, as 6.11.0* just stops dead (powers off completely) shortly after

I updated from 24.04 to 24.10. That worked OK. I was able to login and
check things, ensure I had the correct packages installed etc.
The next day I logged in, then started to have problems after ~15
minutes.
But now, if I boot the system into 6.11.0-9-generic it halts shortly

I've disable BOINC, so there is no real load on the system at all.
If I boot it and login to Kubuntu - (X11 session, as Wayland isn't
usable) it will just stop a few seconds after I login.

The last of these is a Intel NUC with a "13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM)
i3-1315U" processor.
This system does not stay up very long with the 6.11.0-9-generic kernel.
After a minute or so the system stops, the display goes blank an
kernel 6.5.0-17-generic has just arrived in 23.10 (Mantic) and that
seems to clear the issue.

For what its worth, I am experiencing the exact same symptoms as
described after updating from 22.10 which worked fine to 23.04 this am.
My machine however is a HP Proliant Microserver Gen 8. This uses built
in Matrox G200eH2 graphics controller. I have tried installing sudo apt
install xserver-xor
Nothing to do with any screen saver.
Just boot the system, hit Ctl-Alt-F2 (to get to a console) and login.

I have the same problem. The nvidia drivers (version 470 in my case)
don't load after upgrading to 5.13.0-41-generic. Reverting to
5.13.0-39-generic fixes the problem.

The mmc card reader works OK there.
A reboot back to the latest hirsute kernel has it failing again.

I've tested plugging in an SD card to an older laptop (also on hirsute).
That is OK.
I've also noticed that the:
mmc0: error -84 whilst initialising SD card

Issue appears to be related to display resolution. Grub was booting into
3840x2160 mode, with the resulting tiny, near-unreadable font. So I set

An update on this.
I installed kernel 5.0, but the same issue occured. I did notice that my
wi-fi can be re-activated using the keyboard wireless switch (Fn-Wifi).
I have 2 wi-fi networks available, the normal one and the 5G one. I had
been using the 5G one, but switched to use the normal one. My
