I was able to git clone the v4.4.47 kernel over to the machine having
issues. When trying to apply the patches after 0001, it's unable to
locate the file to patch for some. I am seeing this same error on
another machine I've previously successfully upgraded to the 4.4.47
kernel with the same files.
There are possibly two independent issues here. In some cases the
connection is lost after resume, and the module must be reloaded (or
configured to be unloaded at suspend).
The other issue is that nm-applet shows no connection (or in my case it
shows a wired connection and no wifi bar or networks

I confirm,
It seems that is not overlayfs problem.
The problem occurs only with glusterfs backed storage (on nfs server).
I tested this internal gluster nfs server, and ganesha nfs server,
nfs-kernel-server is not supported by glusterfs.
With nfs-kernel-server and ext4 no any problems. Even reado

On my system, running a couple of LXD containers and VMs (16 GB RAM, 16
GB swap) seems to cause the kernel oom-killer to be frequently
triggered.
In order to try to resolve this, first I tried limiting the memory my
containers were allowed to use, such as by using:

Mellanox CX3 VF device is not showing up when booting up with this test kernel:
4.4.0-64-generic.
Looks like this is a regression from 4.4.0-63-generic. In 4.4.0-63-generic, the
VF presented correctly.
