The janitor closed this a few days ago, but with holiday break rolling
around I was finally able to test this on my HP Spectre x360 (please let
me know if a new bug should be opened rather than continuing this one).
I downloaded the debs for mainline kernel v4.4-rc6-wily, and the problem
is fixed
I may or may not have time to do the bisect any time soon, but based on
some log-diving, I strongly suspect

My update:
It looks the issue is somehow related to the backup, but I tend to think there
is a bug somewhere in the storvsc driver code -- it's very hard to track it
down because before the ext4 read-only issue happens, the ext4 file system may
have been somewhat corrupted.
