I finally figured out the problem. The problem existed in almost every live version that I have successfully run in the past including Knoppix. I do not know how the BIOS got changed because I did not fool with it as I did not know it. The video BIOS was set to NOT use the integrated video card.

I have the same issue, and switching to the mainline kernel fixed it (3.19 stable), but unfortunately my laptop overheats when using this version of the kernel and I've had to revert back to Ubuntu kernel (3.16.0-30-generic). Will the issue be fixed in a later revision of the standard Ubuntu 14.10
