The fglrx driver didn't work. The X-server only started to the low graphics
error message and stopped.
I tried the Additional Driver method and the manual command line method to
install the driver.
But the kernel Oops did stop. I got no NULL pointer messages with the
(not working) fglrx driver.
I was having the endless reboot problem with my USB memory stick installing
Ubuntu 14.04.
I forget how I built my bootable USB stick, but I just burned the .ISO to a DVD
and booted with that. Problem solved.
So I think it's the certain tool people are using to make their USB sticks from
the .IS
I attached /var/log/apt/history.log which covers January. Some
explanation on 2015.01.25-26 entries:

As I wrote in the initial report: "This seems to be a regression in the
mainline Kernel, as the default kernel (3.13.0-44-generic) performed
this dd operation without issues - but it seems to be using a different
USB driver for the disk"

Hmm, that might indicate this was introduced by an Ubuntu SAUCE patch.
Can you also test the -proposed kernel:

If the bug still exists in proposed, we can bisect between the 3.16 and
