I have now tested the very latest kernel, version 3.19 rc 1 (from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc1-vivid/), and
backlight control still does not work.
The indicator does pop up and indicates increase and decrease in the
correct way, but the actual backlight level on the lapt
Problem solved by build module wl.ko from sources from broadcom site
(http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php). I just manually
replace old module wl.ko to new.

It seems that this has been fixed by updating to a newer kernel. It's
