Having the same problem, but found a temporary solution:
If you're using Unity, control the BT switch via the BT tray icon. That
should work.

Thank you for your response and helping to make Ubuntu better. This is
a new installation. VGA output to an external 1920x1200 display is
unusably slow (in comparison with 12.04), and so I wondered if the error
message was related to a problem with the i915 graphics subsystem. I
