this did indeed turn out to be a hardware issue where the ALC275 chipset
physically failed (quite surprising). Replacement of the module
corrected the issue thus is not an issue with Ubuntu audio or the
kern
I was tested today's evening last http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.14-rc6-trusty/ package for amd64 on Intel x64 CPU/VMWare
+ SCSI disks - and this last kernel dsnot fixed udev error. Last working
kernel was 3.13.0-11-generic on this server.

Lenovo T440s freezes when connected to docking station

@Joseph - it did happen once when I was running 12.04 with a 3.5 lts-hwe
kernel. I don't have data/logs from that incident. I have seen it twice
since upgrading to trusty. Both incidents were in the last 2 weeks
(since March 1).
