Per the comment on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1247630/comments/2 this did indeed turn out to be a hardware issue where the ALC275 chipset physically failed (quite surprising). Replacement of the module corrected the issue thus is not an issue with Ubuntu audio or the kernel. I propose that this bug be marked as invalid and closed.
