My problem is solved now. I installed the latest groff version 1.19.2.
But I am a bit surprised that it works with your version
1.18.1?

Dean has illustrated the use of "shaded" in pic. You can get a list of
predefined colour names by looking for the file "ps.tmac". You can also
define your own colours (from 'info'):-
