Have you considered this?:
dd doesn't do any sort of error checking or retrying, therefore the
first hiccup it runs into may make it stop, and that's that.
You could mount it and use mkisofs from the command line
also get a few bounce messages "from me" about emails I never
wrote - once your email address is out there, spammers use it as their
from address, even if they're not using your mail server for a relay.

that you do have a CD created for each service, but you
can use CDRW's, and then rip them to a PC if you want.
Just another option to think of.

A word to the wise is often enough to star
drift (which was about 30 minutes a day, but hw clock was ok). I
know adjtime is used to correct inaccurate hwclocks, but it can get
stuffed. post your /etc/adjtime and see what it says...

re referring
to LG as being "not so good", then how about this: a friend of mine
bought a sony cd burner, only to find it was just a rebadged lg burner,
just like the one he already owned. The LG firmware even worked on it,
which gave him an extra colour in the status LED...

p. (also look at MAKEOPTS="-j3", and
FEATURES="distcc" I think in make.conf).
This may be slower than your first suggestion, as ./configure scripts
and so on will still run locally. Depends on your network, etc.
