Hi,
I have an old IBM 19" crt, which dies 1280x960, 1280x1024 fine.
The cable blocks ddc, so I have to give h-sync and vertrefresh range, but
since xfree 4.0 I never had to do anything like 'modlines' etc...
HorizSync31.5 - 96.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0
is everything needed... even 1600

But Holly, I've not noticed you being all that restrained in the past.

Dell paid ATI to support that one model of display. Regardles

Yeah, let me echo that.
If you run Linux, and you want to play games, and you want a brand new
video card, get an nVidia. It's that simple.

Here is why ATI won't become much better over time - most

No prob.

Well, ATI driver sucked 10 years ago, they suck today... I don't think that
ATI is able to make any decent drivers EVER.

It was a bit late last night, so I felt like having to rant about something.

Whooa. I didn't mean to stir a hornet's nest.
All I was saying is, if you you're buying a radeon, new, for a Linux
box, new, you'll be dissapointed. Why? Because the driver can't use
all of X.Org's features. Therefore, my advice would be an nVidia.
That's why I wouldn't tell somebody to go du

Nah, that's fine. Of course, that still leaves me with the option of
either Composite or DRI, never both together, as I have on my, now 5
year old computer with an equally elderly graphics card.
I was just adding that bit in for kicks.

To counter this argument, I would point out that I don't normally
purchase used 3D acceleration hardware, and that by the time these
cards are "old" they will also be "obsolete," meaning that you will
have sunk a good amount of money into hardware that didn't work
properly for you until it was outd

Until ATI wakes up and smells the plants, do NOT buy anything with an
ATI chip on it. They are a disgrace. I think they hired some 8yr olds
to code their proprietary driver, and then have never supported it.
Once the gaming industry starts to leak into the Linux community, and
they start to feel
Well, I cannot turn on composite extension. Right. I'm sure that very early
ATI will improve linux's graphical drivers, as they're doing right now.
They're developing better drivers, so there's no reason about thinking that
composite won't be enabled for ATI graphics card.
Well, I liked TOO MUC
I, humbly, must disagree.
ATI's drivers have been far behind. The Radeon drivers, rather than
the fglrx ones, fall short on many fronts. The ATI fglrx drivers,
have been behind since I got this card. You still can't run composite
and dri together.
Buying an ATI card for a Linux box is not a go
