I fixed it by adding my account to the audio & pulse-access groups.
For some reason, this seemed unnecessary for the previous version and
the console to work properly.

No, this doesn't seem like a PA bug, because I also tried uninstalling
PA completely and the problem was still there.. I didn't have sound
and alsamixer failed with the same error.
